Program Description:
versailles drawing
Over the course of two weeks, we will tour gardens in and around Paris, reflecting on the wide range of roles these green spaces have played in French culture at various historical moments.  From the formal Versailles gardens designed to display Louis XIV's mastery over nature and over his subjects, to the former auto manufacturing plant transformed into a public park in the late twentieth-century push to make Paris greener, we will learn about how these sites were planned, and how they have been read and used by visitors.

Course Objectives: In this course, students will:
  • Strengthen their writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills in French through course assignments, class discussions, and interactions with native speakers
  • Gain confidence in navigating unfamiliar cultural and physical landscapes
  • Develop their knowledge of French culture through the study of gardens designed between the 17th and the 21st century
