About Student Housing

You are free to choose the housing accommodation that best fits your needs. We have both on-campus and off-campus options. Please carefully explore the options and let us know if you have any questions.

On-Campus Housing

The Office of Global Engagement reserves a limited number of on-campus housing spaces for exchange students each semester. While on-campus housing is not always 100% guaranteed, our staff members are committed to helping students find on-campus student housing accommodations.

Students who wish to live on campus will book housing through the Student Housing Office. Most students who choose the on-campus housing option will be placed in one of two options:

The first option is a contemporary dormitory called Residence Hall 3 (RH3). Rooms in RH3 are double-occupancy rooms (shared bedroom and bathroom between two students). Residents in our contemporary halls enjoy in-room bathrooms, study rooms on each floor, conference rooms, community kitchens, and lounges with TVs. Each room includes a microwave and a small fridge for students to store and heat food items. More information and current rates can be found on the Student Housing website.

The second option is an apartment-style living complex called the Quarters. The Quarters is a master lease managed through the Student Housing Office. At the Quarters, there are four private bedrooms per unit. Bedrooms have a private bathroom. The living space, kitchen, dining area, and laundry machines are shared between four roommates. The Quarters also features study rooms, computer labs, a 24/7 gym, and a pool – much like a classic apartment complex. More information and current rates can be found on the Student Housing website.

Students living in RH3 or the Quarters will likely have an international student roommate. Roommate requests are possible. To request a specific roommate, both students must email exchange@olemiss.edu and confirm who they wish to room with. If both students submit the request before room assignment, and if both students complete the Student Housing application on time, they will be placed together.

Instructions on applying to Student Housing for RH3 or the Quarters will be shared with students after they are accepted and admitted to the exchange program.
Application instructions will typically become available in May for the following fall semester and in November for the following spring semester. We will notify all admitted students when and how they can apply for on-campus housing.

An on-campus meal plan is NOT required for exchange students, but it is recommended if living in an on-campus residence hall. Please see the Meal Plan Information section below.

Housing Rules and Policies

All students living in Student Housing facilities must follow the policies and procedures of the University of Mississippi's Department of Student Housing. For information about Student Housing policies and procedures, including housing contracts, room changes, alcohol use, visitor policies, etc., please view the Student Housing Handbook.

Housing Accommodations and Accessibility

If you require a student housing accommodation(s) due to a disability, including the use of a service or assistance animal, please contact your International Advisor at exchange@olemiss.edu. Your International Advisor will connect you with the Student Disability Services (SDS) Office. Staff from the Student Disability Services office will review the request for accommodation(s) in coordination with your International Advisor. If approved, staff will work with Student Housing to provide the recommended accommodation(s). While your request is being reviewed, you should follow the instructions to apply for student housing.

Off-Campus Housing - Independent Booking

There are many other off-campus housing options available to students. The best place to start looking is the University of Mississippi's Off-Campus Housing webpage.

If you choose to live off campus, you must arrange accommodations on your own. Please remember that some apartments are not within walking distance of campus and are not located on a city bus route. Always check the location of an apartment before signing a lease to be sure you have a way to get to campus.

No matter where you choose to live off campus, be sure to request a written lease from your landlord that includes the following information:
  • A description of the property and the total number of people allowed to live in the property

  • Specific occupancy dates and length of lease

  • Subletting allowance

  • Deposit requirements

  • Monthly rent amount and due date

  • How utilities (electricity, cable, water, etc.) are managed, and if utilities are included

  • Responsibility for maintenance and repairs

We understand that choosing a place to live can be difficult. Please reach out to exchange@olemiss.edu with any questions about off-campus housing. Below, we have outlined the pros and cons of some popular housing options around Oxford for your reference.

Food and Meal Plans

On-Campus Meal Plans

You can sign up for a meal plan after you arrive on campus. Please visit the Ole Miss Dining website for more information about dining locations, daily menus, and meal plan options. There are many meal plan options available for exchange students, and you can choose the plan that suits you best. As a new student, you are not required to register for a freshman meal plan. Instead, you can pick from the upperclass meal plan options.

The Meal Plan 101 tool helps students understand their meal plan options and related terminology that may be unfamiliar to you, including Flex dollars, dining dollars, or meal swipes. In addition to the dining halls, we have a wide variety of campus dining locations where you can either pay for your meals with a credit or debit card, meal swipes, or Flex dollars.

Flex Dollars

Flex is part of our Student Dining system. With Flex dollars, students can use their ID card to pay for food at on-campus restaurants. All students enrolled at the University of Mississippi who are under age 25 will be automatically enrolled in $350.00 Flex dollars, which will be billed to your bursar account. Students can also visit the Student ID Center after arriving on campus to add additional Flex dollars if they wish.

Most students will already have $350.00 in Flex dollars, so we encourage you to consider your Flex plan enrollment when you are choosing a meal plan. For example, students may wish to use a combination of Flex dollars and a lower-cost meal plan. It is also important to know that students may receive a refund for unused Flex dollars at the end of their program. Students can request a refund by contacting the Student ID Center.

Starship Delivery Robots

Ole Miss recently introduced the Starship Deliveries program. When you first see these little robots traveling around campus, you might be curious about what they are doing. They deliver food! If you want to use Starship Delivery, you only need the iPhone or Android app. They deliver food from a variety of our on-campus vendors, including Starbucks!

Off-Campus Meal Options

From fast-food options to award-winning restaurants, Oxford has many amazing food venues! Explore the dining options and famous restaurants on the Visit Oxford website. In addition, there are grocery stores and local markets for students who prefer to cook for themselves. Many of these markets are accessible via public transportation.

If you are preparing your budget for your upcoming exchange program, here are the approximate costs for off-campus meals:

  • Breakfast: $5-12

  • Coffee: $4-8

  • Lunch: $10-15

  • Dinner: $15-30

  • Dessert: $4-8
