Sri Lanka is an island nation that was embroiled in civil war for 26 years. At peace for seven years, the nation is emerging and advancing in tourism and international trade. Students will conduct interviews with local stakeholders, take video and still photographs and produce documentaries as well as a collection of their stories and photographs. Depth Reporting is designed to give students real-life experience in writing, reporting, photographing and producing in-depth news stories, photos and video across news media platforms. Students prepare content for an in-depth, full-color, print magazine on Sri Lanka that is distributed to alumni, state officials, interested parties, newspapers and television stations.
This class is designed to lead students to complete a package of the best-reported, best-written, most in-depth stories they have ever done and put their work in top-quality print and video products. This class will focus on interviewing skills, computer research, reporting, quality of writing, magazine writing, proper structure and the lost art of the outline. It will stress the effective use of detail to give a story layers of depth and authority. It will entail a certain degree of risk-taking – of trying different writing and reporting styles, approaches and techniques. Finally, it will also examine the critical role in-depth journalism plays in a democratic society.
By the end of the course students will:
• Write multiple in-depth stories exploring the culture of Sri Lanka, with an emphasis on changes in the culture, economy and quality of life.
• Produce material for a web site and multi-media packages that explore Sri Lankan culture.
• Demonstrate an understanding knowledge of the history, culture, economic resurgence and aspirations of the people of Sri Lanka.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the classic elements of good writing and photography.
