Program Description:
Program Description:
Spend a semester in the dynamic city of Hong Kong!  Take a trip to Victoria Peak and see the city from above, visit the largest outdoor Buddha on Lantau Island, and walk through the bustling Central area on Hong Kong Island after eating Hong Kong's famous dumplings!  Students studying at Hong Kong Baptist University take courses in English along with other international and Chinese students.  Hong Kong Baptist University is located on Kowloon, in a central area near the convenient Hong Kong public transportation system.

A list of the courses offered at Hong Kong Baptist University is available at the course information link. Students applying to this program should plan to meet with the appropriate academic advisors to help determine course selection and to seek the necessary course approval(s).

All students will be registered by the Study Abroad Office as full-time students during their semester abroad, which is 12 hours for undergraduate students and 9 hours for graduate students.  Undergraduate students must return with the equivalent of at least 12 hours of credit on their host university transcript (9 hours for graduate students).  Students can take additional hours and are not limited to the minimum full-time requirement while abroad.  All courses are graded on an ABCDF scale.  There is no Pass/Fail.

Students have the option of living in an on-campus dormitory or making arrangements independently.  Hong Kong Baptist University will place exchange students in reasonably-priced dormitories on campus with budget-friendly cafeterias attached.

For the Hong Kong Baptist University exchange, students are responsible for paying:
  • Current, full-time, UM tuition (including non-resident fees, if applicable)
  • UM Study Abroad fee (includes the cost for international health insurance)
  • Housing costs (details and payment are usually handled between the student and the host university)
  • Travel expenses, books and supplies, personal living costs, passport and visa fees (all the responsibility of the student)
Students who withdraw or become ineligible after the application deadline will be responsible for a withdrawal fee.

Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing to study abroad and must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA.  Additional or more stringent requirements may apply depending on the program.

In general, financial aid will apply to UM study abroad programs.  All students should review the study abroad information on the Financial Aid Office website.  It is the student’s responsibility to meet with a financial aid advisor to discuss how aid packages apply to study abroad.  Third party scholarships may also be available for specific programs, so students should discuss study abroad early and often with the Study Abroad Office and the Financial Aid Office.

For current tuition costs, the Office of the Bursar provides a tuition estimator.

Students can take survival Cantonese or Mandarin Chinese at HKBU, but it is not required.  All other courses are taught in English.
