Program Description:
nanjing university

Nanjing University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China and is located in the old capital of China, Nanjing.  Nanjing has long been one of the most important cities in China, located in the heart of the Yangzi River delta and home to many traditional landmarks and modern companies.  Students study at the Gulou campus in the center of Nanjing, where there are conveniently located restaurants and entertainment areas.

Students studying Chinese at all levels can study at Nanjing University; however, the program is focused on Chinese language learning.  Some classes taught in English are offered but vary by semester.  Students with sufficiently advanced Chinese language skills can take courses with local university students in Chinese.  Students applying to this program should plan to meet with the appropriate academic advisors to help determine course selection and to seek the necessary course approval(s).

All students will be registered by the Study Abroad Office as full-time students during their semester abroad, which is 12 hours for undergraduate students and 9 hours for graduate students.  Undergraduate students must return with the equivalent of at least 12 hours of credit on their host university transcript (9 hours for graduate students).  Students can take additional hours and are not limited to the minimum full-time requirement while abroad.  All courses are graded on an ABCDF scale.  There is no Pass/Fail.

Nanjing University recommends that students reserve a room at the Xiyuan Hotel adjacent to Nanjing University.  The cost ranges from 190 yuan/day to 210 yuan/day.  On-campus dormitories are not available.  Students can make independent arrangements but are solely responsible for these arrangements.

For the Nanjing University exchange, students are responsible for paying:
  • Current, full-time, UM tuition (including non-resident fees, if applicable)
  • UM Study Abroad fee (includes the cost for international health insurance)
  • Housing costs (details and payment are usually handled between the student and the host university)
  • Travel expenses, books and supplies, personal living costs, passport and visa fees (all the responsibility of the student)
Students who withdraw or become ineligible after the application deadline will be responsible for a withdrawal fee.

Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing to study abroad and must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA.  Additional or more stringent requirements may apply depending on the program.

In general, financial aid will apply to UM study abroad programs.  All students should review the study abroad information on the Financial Aid Office website.  It is the student’s responsibility to meet with a financial aid advisor to discuss how aid packages apply to study abroad.  Third party scholarships may also be available for specific programs, so students should discuss study abroad early and often with the Study Abroad Office and the Financial Aid Office.

For current tuition costs, the Office of the Bursar provides a tuition estimator.

Students must take Chinese language while studying at Nanjing University.  Students in all levels of Chinese, from beginner to advanced, can study at Nanjing University.  Additional courses taught in English are available but vary by semester.  Students with sufficiently advanced Chinese language skills can take courses with local university students in Chinese.
