Propose a Program
Faculty-led study abroad programs provide an opportunity for faculty at the University of Mississippi to design innovative courses that connect academic learning with global experiences. These programs allow instructors to integrate international perspectives, site-based learning, and cultural engagement directly into their curriculum. Faculty interested in developing a program should begin by reviewing the proposal process, timeline, and planning resources outlined below. The Study Abroad Office works closely with faculty throughout the process to support program development, budgeting, logistics, and student recruitment.
Program Proposal Process & How to Submit a Proposal
1. Complete the Study Abroad Program Proposal
The first step for faculty considering a study away program is to complete the Faculty Directed Study Abroad Program Proposal This form prompts faculty to begin thinking through the academic, financial, and risk management aspects of program planning. It also serves as a guide for the initial conversation with the Office of Global Engagement (OGE).
Once submitted, OGE will contact the faculty member to schedule a meeting. Find the Program Proposal form here.
Before the starting the Program Proposal, faculty should:

Speak with their Department Head regarding requirements or expectations for faculty members taking part in study away programs.

Familiarize themselves with the Study Abroad Program Director Manual.

Review the Study Abroad Credit Hour Policy and Performance Expectations for Ole Miss Program Directors, Faculty, and Staff

Prepare a sample syllabus and itinerary for their proposed study abroad program. Find a sample syllabus and itinerary for viewing here.
Faculty Study Abroad Program Proposals should include:

Program name and course information (prefix, number, and credit hours)
-
Program dates (instructional and travel)
-
Academic itinerary, including lecture, field/lab, and pre-departure contact hours
-
Preliminary program itinerary, including a daily schedule showing the structure of the course abroad.

Instructor information (with home department).
-
Include standard course outcomes and global or intercultural learning outcomes.

Reading Materials or other required materials students must access abroad.

Risk management and safety measures
2. Office of Global Engagement Review
The Office of Global Engagement reviews proposals for viability, health and safety, and alignment with university policies. Feedback may be provided for revisions. After your proposal has been accepted, the Office of Global Engagement will reach out and schedule a meeting. The purpose of this meeting is to:

Discuss the academic rationale and benefits of the program.

Evaluate program viability and fit among existing UM offerings.

Review proposed academic content, finances, and long-term sustainability.

Assess the safety and stability of the intended location.
3. Program Development
Following the initial meeting, faculty will work with OGE staff to:

Finalize program itinerary and program proposal

Build program budget and sign budget agreements

Build program website page
-
Coordinate marketing, recruitment, and student advising

Prepare pre-departure orientation materials
-
Complete faculty pre-departure paperwork
4. Program Implementation
Faculty lead the program abroad with support from OGE. Instructors are responsible for delivering approved academic content and ensuring the program adheres to UM policies.
5. Post-Program Reporting
At the end of the program, faculty submit a brief report and assist in gathering student feedback for future program improvement.

This timeline outlines the key stages involved in planning and leading a Spring or Winter faculty-led study abroad program. The timeline concludes with program travel and post-program responsibilities such as evaluations, financial reconciliation, and final reporting.
Summer Program Timeline
This timeline highlights the major steps involved in planning and leading a Summer faculty-led study abroad program. The process begins with the call for program proposals and continues through proposal approval, program development, and student recruitment with support from the Office of Global Engagement. It concludes with pre-departure preparation, program travel, and post-program responsibilities such as evaluations, financial reconciliation, and final reporting.
