PROGRAM
Spend a semester in Tokyo!  Tokyo is a bustling metropolis that showcases modernity and tradition in a fascinating way.  Waseda University is located in the heart of Tokyo, with easy access by train to every area of Tokyo.  Meet edgy punks in Harajuku or see the Imperial Palace near Ginza.  Stop by a shrine on your way to Roppongi!

COURSES AND CREDITS
A list of the courses offered at Waseda University is available at the course information link. Students applying to this program should plan to meet with the appropriate academic advisors to help determine course selection and to seek the necessary course approval(s).

All students will be registered by the Study Abroad Office as full-time students during their semester abroad, which is 12 hours for undergraduate students and 9 hours for graduate students.  Undergraduate students must return with the equivalent of at least 12 hours of credit on their host university transcript (9 hours for graduate students).  Students can take additional hours and are not limited to the minimum full-time requirement while abroad.  All courses are graded on an ABCDF scale.  There is no Pass/Fail.

HOUSING
Students have the option of living in a dormitory, home stay, or making arrangements independently.  Waseda University recommends several options in the Tokyo area.  Students should expect to commute, as this is common for Tokyo residents, and commuting times depend on the location.

PROGRAM COSTS
For the Waseda University exchange, students are responsible for paying:
  • Current, full-time, UM tuition (including non-resident fees, if applicable)
  • UM Study Abroad fee (includes the cost for international health insurance)
  • Housing costs (details and payment are usually handled between the student and the host university or housing office)
  • Travel expenses, books and supplies, personal living costs, passport and visa fees (all the responsibility of the student)
Students who withdraw or become ineligible after the application deadline will be responsible for a withdrawal fee. For more details, please refer to the Study Abroad Policies & Procedures page.

ELIGIBILITY
Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing to study abroad and must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA.  Additional or more stringent requirements may apply depending on the program.

Please see the requirements document for JLPT information, etc.

FINANCIAL AID
In general, financial aid will apply to UM study abroad programs.  All students should review the study abroad information on the Financial Aid Office website.  It is the student’s responsibility to meet with a financial aid advisor to discuss how aid packages apply to study abroad.  Third party scholarships may also be available for specific programs, so students should discuss study abroad early and often with the Study Abroad Office and the Financial Aid Office.

For current tuition costs, the Office of the Bursar provides a tuition estimator.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND LINKS
